Fighting Childhood obesity is a nationwide problem; there are over three million American children who are significantly overweight. According to the World Health Organization, obesity among children is a "damaging health issue, which affects later health, educational attainment, and quality of life."

Cases of childhood obesity have tripled since the 1970s. There are many reasons behind this, including the rise of electronic games and the shortening of recess or unsupervised outdoor play time.  Luckily, obesity is reversible and preventable, and innovations like standing desks in classrooms are one of the best and most practical solutions for fighting childhood obesity.

Children who are overweight run the risk of developing childhood diabetes, depression, anxiety, and high blood pressure. Teachers believe that it also leads to poor academic performance. Unfortunately, our current model requires students to stay seated at their desks for the majority of the day, and sitting all day increases a child's risk of obesity and slows their metabolism. It also decreases a student's blood flow, slows digestion, and lowers energy levels. A simple change like switching to stand-up desks in the classroom significantly decreases these risks.

The world is catching on to the fact that children should not be sedentary for the majority of the day, and leaders and organizations are making the call for change. The National Football League has a campaign called "Play 60" that encourages children to be active for at least an hour a day. First Lady Michelle Obama implemented her "Let's Move" program to encourage movement and reverse childhood obesity. One of the best ideas for getting kids moving throughout the day is to bring the benefits of stand up desks in the classrooms. Kids get exercise without even realizing it, and standing desks help prevent obesity.

Standing at a standing desk burns 15-35% more calories than sitting at a conventional school desk. Standing also helps prevent Type 2 Diabetes, lowers a child's cholesterol, and can lower their BMI or Body Mass Index. Preventing and reversing childhood obesity is not the only benefit of standing desks in the classroom. Standing desks increase engagement and attention, improve classroom management, increase test scores, improves mental health, and strengthen corporation and collaboration between students. Even regular exercise and healthy eating cannot undo the effects of sitting all day, so getting stand up desks in classrooms across America is extremely important.
