The new year is here, and now is the time to make meaningful resolutions for healthy living in the year to come. Healthy living doesn't always have to be about dieting or hitting the gym. There are lots of small changes you can adopt this year that will add up to a healthier lifestyle for you and your family. And one of the best ways to stick with your resolutions is to use the buddy system: get your friends, family, coworkers and classmates involved. Not only is it more fun to be active as a group, but it's also easier to stay on track. By building a community invested in healthy changes, you can inspire each other to stand up and get moving together.

Let's Get Moving!

This year, It's Time Texas is making it easier for people to live healthier lives and build healthier communities with their fifth annual Community Challenge. This 12-week challenge is aimed at galvanizing and uniting schools, businesses, community and faith-based organizations, and local leaders in a common goal of greater community health.  Groups compete in five different categories based on group size, and they earn points for making healthy choices and getting more activity. Does your community have what it takes to be crowned a winner in this year's challenge? Here are some of the ways you can get involved.

Let the Competition Begin!

As an individual, you can start earning points by registering for the Community Challenge online. Then go out and get active! You can earn points for everything from physical activity to tracking your weight. But don't stop there: why not get your friends and neighbors involved, too? Create a fitness-focused event at a local gym, park or community center for others to learn more about the challenge and get active. Use Facebook, NextDoor, or Meetup to advertise the event and reach an even wider audience. Then follow up with the group periodically over the next three months to keep everyone motivated and engaged. 

Anyone and Everyone Can Get Involved! 

Your school, church or business can get involved by joining the Community Challenge and signing a pledge. This is a great way to get everyone committed to making a change for healthy living. Then set up a series of healthy activities to keep your team involved. You can organize a group walk at your office during your lunch hour, host a fitness activity at school, or ask a fitness instructor to lead a yoga or Pilates class at your church. Remember to set weekly activity goals and continue to communicate with your group to keep them motivated. You can also recognize individuals for their achievements each week, which is a great way to create a fun and competitive atmosphere.
